What Is an NSFAS Appeal Letter?

Many people tend to forget that before they comprehend the process of composing an NSFAS Appeal Motivation letter; they must first understand what the NSFAS motivational letter entails. An NSFAS appeal letter is a letter that is written by a student addressed to national student financial aid scheme requesting for a review of their funding status. This letter is often written whenever a student has applied for financial aid unsuccessfully or where the financial aid in question has been withdrawn, mostly on grounds of academic discipline or other related issues.

In the appeal letter, the student gives the reasons that explain the difficulties encountered which led to refusal or withdrawal of the family’s allowances. They give new information or proof which explains why they should be supported financially. The introductory paragraph, therefore, strives to indicate that the problems that are in their way are only temporary and will not hinder their education in the years to come.

Possible Reason of NSFAS Reject  your  Application?

NSFAS checks on your eligibility – and that is what leads to delays, hold-ups, and sometimes rejection of your application.

The check starts with your documents. Have you submitted all the documents required? Have they been completed in full? Have they been signed and certified correctly? Are you a South African citizen? Do you meet the household financial limits?

Then NSFAS uses outside agencies to check that what you have said is correct. Finally, they need to know from the educational institution whether there is space for you,  whether you have met the academic requirements either for new admission or continuing studies, and whether you have registered.

The last step before payments can start is that you must sign an NSFAS bursary agreement.

If you meet all the requirements, you will get a grant. However, NSFAS can refuse your application if you do not meet even one of these requirements.

How to Write An NSFAS Appeal Motivation Letter?

Writing an NSFAS appeal motivation letter is not just a means to an end, rather it demands significant attention and therefore the purpose of this statement is to elaborate on the act carefully. Writing a letter of appeal can be quite burdensome for a number of people especially when they have already been denied a chance. Nevertheless, it is an important step that can enable you to obtain the assistance that you require. The following steps will help you learn how to write a motivation letter for NSFAS:

  • Review Your NSFAS Application: Prior to commencing the writing process, go through your Base Application precisely to comprehend the rationale behind its rejection. Identify any errors or gaps in information that may have led to the verdict.
  • Download & Complete the Appeal Form: The first step in initiating the appeals procedure is to access the official NSFAS site and obtain the appeal form. After it has been downloaded, it should be printed and completed in block letters. You may attach the form to your appeal letter while submitting it.
  • Draft a Formal Appeal Letter: Now, the following phase will entail composing a formal appeal letter which will be well structured. State the reasons why you think the rejection is subject to reconsideration. Explain honestly any challenges that may have affected your academic or financial situation.
  • Attach Supporting Documents: Include any additional materials that may support your claim, including but not limited to medical certificates, death certificates, or evidence of financial constraints.
  • Proofread for Accuracy and Clarity:Ensure that your correspondence is devoid of any linguistic or orthographic errors. There should be a proper address and subject heading in the letters. If feasible, it is better to write, type, and sign the letter for a neater outlook.
  • Submit Your Appeal: Once you have completed the appeal form and letter, submit them to the financial aid office at your institution. It is important to follow up with NSFAS to ensure your documents have been received and are being processed.

How Do You Write An NSFAS Appeal Letter?

All appeals must also include a motivational letter. The simpler and clearer this letter is, the better your chances that NSFAS will consider your situation. Also remember that the letter must not exceed 1000 characters (words including spaces).

Here is an example of how you might structure this letter.

  1. Start with the basics
  • Personal details: This includes your full names, ID number, email and cell phone, home address
  • Institution details: University or College name, student number, course of study, year of study
  • NSFAS details: Year you are applying for, date of application and reference number received from NSFAS (if you are a new applicant) or history of previous funding (if you are a continuing student), date of rejection, and the reason given for refusal.
  1. Explain your situation
  • Describe the problems you experienced and how they affected your ability to secure NSFAS funding
  • Illness, death in the family, parent or guardian’s loss of job, disruptions to power/internet connectivity that affected your ability to upload documents or complete your NSFAS application
  • Attach documents to prove your descriptions
  • Illness – attach a medical report/doctor’s letter
  • Death in the family – attach the death certificate
  • Change in the household financial situation – attach UIF, dismissal or retrenchment letters, payslips
  • Academics – attach transcript of previous and latest results
  1. Describe steps you have taken to mitigate the situation
  • Emails, Facebook or Twitter messages, attempts to reach contact center, visits to institution’s financial aid office, etc
  1. Reasons why your appeal should be considered
  • Academic – previous results were acceptable, latest results were affected by illness, death, etc
  • Lack of documentation – financial and technical reasons for not being able to submit in time
  • Financial – previous and current financial position

If you structure your letter clearly and proofread it to make sure there are no spelling and grammatical errors, you make it easier for the person at NSFAS to deal with your appeal.
