How to apply for NSFAS  Online National Student Financial Aid Scheme(NSFAS) Official Open the Application Window for the Academic year 2025-2026.

Who Qualifies For NSFAS:

  • South African citizen
  • family with a combined annual household income of not more than R350 000
  • for students with a disability, the combined annual household income of not more than R600 000
  • New applicants need a copy of their ID or birth certificate to register and create a myNSFAS account
  • Applicants with existing accounts must log onto their accounts to complete an application

Supporting Documents

  • Student's ID copy 
  • parent/guardian's proof of income 
  • parent/guardian's ID copies 
  • Disability Annexure A for applicants with disabilities: Download Annexure

Steps to Apply for nsfas Online

  • To apply go to my.nsfas.org.za
  • Sign in if you have an account or Register a new Account
  • After signing in you will be taken to a dashboard Then Press APPLY
  • Returning students are not required to apply again but they should maintain a 50%  pass on their modules in the current year for nsfas to continue funding them.

 NSFAS Bursary Funding Cover: 

  • Book allowance.
  • Monthly Meal allowances.
  • Prescribed learning material.
  • Registration fees.
  • Tuition fees.
  • Accommodations.
  • Transport allowances for spending

University Students Allowances:

  • Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET College NSFAS Allowance 

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

  • Q: Can I apply for NSFAS if I’m funded by 2020  but never registered for the academic year of 2020?
  • A: Yes, You will need to re-apply for 2021 to receive 2021 NSFAS Funding.
  • Q: My nsfas account is not active what should I do?
  • A: You need to go to mynsfas login page and click “Complete Registration” then enter your ID Number, follow the instructions on the screen.
