PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Southern Africa Regional Office seeks a Strategy and Project Management Specialist who will 1) coordinate and support field office strategy alignment, implementation and learning in addition to providing recommendations on improving strategy implementation success 2) track the progress of the region in achieving key strategic initiatives outlined as part of the World Vision International global strategy, Going Further and make recommendations to improve implementation success 3) provide project management and research support to the Senior Director of Operations.

Using strong analytical skills, and tools (such as root cause analysis) and available data, the Strategy and Project Management Specialist will analyze and provide recommendations for the region to 1) better understand strategic and operational issues that may impede progress across any area of World Vision’s Southern Africa’s operations and 2) increase our ability to seize opportunities to achieve more for children. In collaboration with the Strategy, Evidence and Learning Director and the other regional directors, this position will develop models, identify trends, test hypotheses and build compelling arguments to support improved cross-functional engagement, simplification, alignment of investments and overall support the region to “solve complex problems once, quickly, with higher quality and lower cost.”

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy Alignment, Development and Implementation Support

Lead Strategy Scenario Planning and Ongoing Thinking About Context:

  • Maintain a robust and current understanding of the socio-political and economic context of the southern Africa region. Anticipate changes taking place in the NGO/development sector and in the region so that we can respond effectively with adaptive strategies. Work with Global Centre (GC), Regional Office (RO) and Field Office (FO) staff, using internal and external strategy tools including scenario planning, GEOCARR, and FCPM to develop new insights and approaches that will guide field office strategy work.
  • Support Strategy Refresh: Provide technical guidance and oversight to field office strategy refresh/development processes ensuring alignment to field office contextual realities, WVI guidance and Our Promise. Ensure SAR strategies align with Our Promise and directly contribute to Our Promise strategic initiatives through clearly defined annual targets, key performance indicators (KPIs) and business plans. Work with the field and regional Design Monitoring and Evaluation teams to ensure that all programming including grants and contracts, align with field office strategies.

Lead Regional Strategy Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Collect data (qualitative and quantitative), analyse data (nationally and regionally), and make recommendations to FO and RO leadership on the status of strategy implementation. Create reports and presentations to support understanding of the data and operational realities of strategy implementation. Use data analysis outcomes as the basis of recommendations to encourage evidence based decision-making.
  • Work with the Information Technology regional team to develop monitoring and reporting systems that are not intrusive to field offices and make use of existing reporting systems.

Strategy Realisation:

  • Contribute to building a strong network of strategy realization leads at the field level. Encourage collaboration between operations, programs and strategy leads.

Our Promise Strategic Initiatives:

  • Work with FO functional leaders, particularly those representing Ministry Impact, Ministry Funding, Operational Excellence and People Learning and Growth and other technical subject matter experts, to identify strategy successes, hindrances and opportunities to streamline business processes and simplify operations.
  • Annual Strategy Review and Scorecard Reporting: Ensure quality reporting at FO and RO level. Ensure that scorecards targets are up-to-date and reported on time. Collaboratively engage with FO stakeholders and ensure the development of a structured and routine process of learning and reflection on the progress of achieving strategic objectives. Ensure documentation of and sharing learning, reflections and adaptations in strategy implementation. Work with the Information Technology regional team to develop monitoring and reporting systems that are not intrusive to field offices and make use of existing reporting systems.

Capacity Building:

  • Support the quality and integrity of Southern Africa strategies through strengthening strategy capability for field office strategy focal points. Support the SAR leadership in ongoing efforts to strengthen strategy capacity across all WV SAR entities – tracking progress towards critical performance metrics and escalating areas of misalignment. Support continual improvement of strategy tools and training resources and ensure alignment with the partnership tools.

Project Management

Provide project management leadership for the Strategy Evidence and Learning team and the Senior Director of Operations for the following projects:

  • Strategic Initiatives: Track and report on the status of the various strategic initiatives implemented in Southern Africa. Escalate challenges, clarify risks, opportunities and dependencies within and between strategic initiatives and relevant field offices and regional office functional change initiatives.
  • Our Voice: Conduct and report on trend analysis of Our Voice survey data to support the Our Promise and #teamSARO culture and change management agenda.
  • Regional Fora: Track delivery of outcomes from key regional fora including the integrated forum, and other regional office meetings such as homeweek. Engage directly with goal owner to ensure delivery of outcomes.
  • RL and SMT Scorecard: Track delivery of RL and SMT scorecard on monthly/quarterly basis, depending on global and regional timelines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • A university degree or equivalent in strategy, project management, economics, business administration, public administration, international developmentor related fields.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Formal qualification in project management or data analytics.
  • 5 years’ experience in business strategy development and reporting strategy execution.

Demonstrated skills in the following:

  • Persuade, convince, or influence others.
  • Understand and analyse data.
  • Manage and track ongoing delivery of projects, work with MS Project, Sharepoint, MS Teams, Google Docs, and other similar tools.
  • Present information on progress and status reports using appropriate language, and in a visually appealing and effective manner using PowerPoint, Microsoft Office Suite and other presentation platforms.
  • Experience working in an ambiguous and matrixed organizational environment.
  • Experience balancing the needs and interests of various stakeholders and makes decisions involving competing goals, objectives and alternatives.
  • Experience prioritizing tasks and redirects work effort in response to changes in priorities.
  • English Language Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to express ideas, thoughts and concepts clearly and report, present, communicate and influence, both verbally and in writing, using modern standard, grammatically correct English.

Work Environment/Travel:

  • The position requires ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.
  • This position requires individuals who are able to work effectively and efficiently in and with diverse and inclusive cross-functional teams
