How to Claim Paternity Leave from UIF in South Africa? Parents in South Africa are now entitled to four months of parental leave, regardless of whether it’s for the birth, adoption, or commissioning parental leave. This is a significant increase from the previous provision of ten days for parental leave.,Here on this page will show you How to Claim Paternity Leave from UIF South Africa.

What Is UIF Paternity Leave?

UIF paternity leave is financial support provided to qualifying fathers or partners who take leave after the birth or adoption of a child.

The benefit is managed by the Unemployment Insurance Fund and helps replace part of your income during leave.

 According to the Department of Labour the following forms should be used to claim Parental benefit:- (It’s called parental benefits not paternity benefits)

  • UI-19 – Declaration of information of commercial employees and workers employed in the private household
  • UI 2.7 – Remuneration received by the employer whilst in employment

​- UI2.8 – Authorisation to pay benefits into banking account

  • UI2.9 – Application for payment of parental benefits in terms of regulation 6 (3)
  • UI2.9 Application for p​arental benefit in terms of section 26 (a)​

Qualifying UIF contributors can visit any Labour Centre in the country with the prescribed application form and the following support documents to submit for a Parental Benefit claim:

  • Identity Document of the applicant;
  • Birth Certificate of the child with full details of parents; and
  • Details of a valid bank account.

How have the UIF benefit entitlements for parents changed?

The Labour Laws Amendment Act amended the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Act to establish a fund that pays for 10 consecutive days of parental leave, and for 10 consecutive weeks of adoption and commissioning leave. Previously, fathers would use their three days family responsibility leave as parental leave, and the company (as opposed to the UIF) would pay this.
