This year’s competition is intended to serve as a warm-up for the full-fledged edition, which will debut in the 2024–25 season after being postponed by a year.
Background
The league, formerly dubbed the Africa Super League in 2022, was set to have 24 teams split among three geographical areas and feature a promotion-relegation structure. The African Football League was created, the competition was moved from August to October 2023, and the structure was changed to an eight-team knockout for the first season. This season is intended to serve as a lead-up to the first announced format, which will be used starting in 2024–2025.

Format
Each tie will be played over two legs, with each team playing one leg at home. The team that will score more goals on aggregate over the two legs will advance to the next round. If the aggregate score will be level, the away goals rule will be applied, i.e. the team that will score more goals away from home over the two legs will advance. If away goals will be also equal, then extra time will not be played and the winners will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
