What NSFAS Discontinuation Of Funding Means?Discontinuation of NSFAS funding means that NSFAS has decided to withdraw or stop funding a student completely. Several reasons can lead NSFAS to discontinue NSFAS funding.
NSFAS reserves the right to withdraw or cease financial aid to a student under the following circumstances
NSFAS will discontinue a student’s funding if the student no longer meets the financial or academic eligibility requirements.
The scheme will not fund a student who has committed fraud against NSFAS or another beneficiary or was funded by mistake.
Funding will also be discontinued if incorrect information was submitted by the institution, resulting in erroneous funding, if the student provided false or incorrect information when requested, or if dual registration records from different institutions for the same student remain unresolved.
Common Reasons Why NSFAS Funding Gets Discontinued
Understanding why funding is stopped helps you avoid or fix the issue.
1. Academic Performance Issues
NSFAS has strict academic rules. If you:
- Fail too many modules
- Do not meet minimum pass requirements
Your funding may be withdrawn.
2. Exceeding N+ Rule
NSFAS follows the N+ rule, meaning:
- N = standard duration of your course
- +1 = one extra year allowed
If you exceed this period, funding stops automatically.
3. Financial Ineligibility
If your household income:
- Increases above the NSFAS threshold
You may no longer qualify.
4. Incorrect or Fraudulent Information
Providing false details can lead to:
- Immediate discontinuation
- Possible blacklisting
5. Dropping Out or Deregistering
If you:
- Leave your course
- Are no longer registered at your institution
NSFAS stops funding instantly.
Who Qualifies For NSFAS?
The most important requirement for your NSFAS financial assistance application is that the student has a combined gross household income of R350,000 or less per year to qualify for a NSFAS bursary.
This means that if the total annual income of everyone in their household exceeds R350,000, they won’t qualify. For a NSFAS loan, the household income must be R600,000 or less per year.
Additionally, NSFAS only funds South African Citizens.
What Happens After NSFAS Funding Is Discontinued?
Once your funding is cut:
- You become personally responsible for tuition fees
- You may be blocked from registering for the next semester
- Your academic progress may be delayed
- Debt may accumulate with your institution
This can significantly impact your future if not addressed quickly.
What to Do If Your NSFAS Application is Cancelled
If you see a “Cancelled” NSFAS status and you didn’t intentionally cancel your application, take the following steps:
- Contact NSFAS: Reach out to NSFAS immediately to inquire about the reason for the cancellation. You can contact them via email or phone.
- Review your application: Double-check your application to ensure all required documents are submitted and information is accurate.
- Provide necessary documentation: If any documents are missing, submit them as soon as possible.
- Appeal the decision: If you believe the cancellation was in error, you may be able to appeal the decision.
