Understanding the Sasol Fire Fighter in Training Programme

The Fire Fighter in Training role is designed as a development position that prepares candidates for operational firefighting roles within Sasol’s emergency management division.

Successful candidates will undergo structured training and workplace exposure, allowing them to develop the physical, technical, and mental skills needed to respond to emergencies in industrial environments.

These emergencies may include:

  • Fires in plant facilities
  • Chemical incidents
  • Hazardous material spills
  • Medical emergencies
  • Rescue operations

Over time, candidates can progress through various firefighting ranks based on training, qualifications, and experience.

Appointments may be made from Fire Fighter in Training up to Leading Fire Fighter, depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant.

Key Responsibilities of the Fire Fighter in Training

The selected candidates will work closely with experienced emergency response teams to ensure the company’s operations remain safe and prepared for any emergency.

Core duties include:

Emergency Response

  • Respond to emergency situations such as fires and hazardous incidents
  • Assist with rescue and evacuation procedures
  • Participate in emergency drills and preparedness exercises

Safety and Compliance

  • Apply SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) best practices
  • Follow company emergency management procedures
  • Support safety improvement initiatives

Training and Development

  • Participate in physical and technical training programmes
  • Maintain mental and physical readiness for emergencies
  • Take part in KPA (Key Performance Area) and PDP (Personal Development Plan) discussions

Equipment Maintenance

  • Recondition firefighting and life-support equipment
  • Service portable firefighting equipment across plants and buildings
  • Maintain emergency response tools

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify improvements in emergency management activities
  • Suggest better ways to improve safety and service delivery
  • Participate in workplace housekeeping activities

These responsibilities ensure that trainees develop a complete understanding of industrial firefighting operations.

Minimum Requirements

Basic Qualification

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics or equivalent qualification

Health Requirements

  • Must be medically fit
  • Must meet the relevant Fire Fighter fitness assessment standards

Experience

  • 0 to 5 years of relevant experience

This means recent matriculants or early career applicants can still qualify.

Additional Qualifications That Will Be Advantageous

While not mandatory, Sasol indicates that certain certifications will strengthen an application.

Preferred certifications include:

  • Fire Fighter Level 1 and Level 2 (NFPA 1001)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations (NFPA 1072 / 472)
  • HPCSA Registered BAA (Basic Ambulance Assistant) or BLS
  • First Aid Level 3
  • HPCSA Registered Intermediate Life Support (ILS)
