What is NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme
(NSFAS) is the government student bursary
and loan scheme that receives its funding
budget from, and reports to the Department
of Higher Education and Training.

What is SASSA Grant

The SRD Grant though, it is a temporary grant, which the South African government put into place for individuals and households who are in distress as a result of COVID-19. In the case of the NSFAS and the SRD Grant, both target the provision of financial support; the former addresses different categories of people and has distinct eligibility requirements.

Reason for  NSFAS Cancelletion?

Students who have a change in their financial situation or who get other funding sources may need to cancel their NSFAS application. Keeping correct records with NSFAS is very important. An application that is not canceled can cause avoidable administrative problems and may even harm future funding chances.

Considerations To Make Before Cancellation

Rescission of a NSFAS funding is a heavy action. Here are a few factors that should be looked into critically:

Impact on Education: The NSFAS funding assists with your
education. Therefore, withdrawing it may mean that you do not have spare cash
to pay your school fees, rent, among other important things
since you will be expected to fund yourself.
Repaying NSFAS Loan: In case you have been given a
NSFAS scholarship before (which at the same time is a loan) in the event of
discontinuing studies you will be needed to return the funds by the time
graduating or quitting school. Cancellation could push your repayment
schedule to a later date.
Consider Other Funding Sources: Look for other funding
options such as bursaries, scholarships, or part-time work and do not jump
towards cancelling NSFAS.
Applying for SRD Grant: Check if you qualify for the SRD grant
before deciding to cancel NSFAS. Such information is available on SASSA’s
website.
