For health science graduates in South Africa, completing an internship and community service is a critical step toward professional registration and long-term employment. The Department of Health Internship and Community Service Programme (ICSP) is the official system used by the government to place qualifying graduates at accredited health facilities across the country.

The ICSP is a government-managed programme that places health science graduates into structured internship and community service posts. These placements are mandatory for many health professions before full registration with professional councils.

The programme helps ensure that communities across South Africa, including rural areas, have access to trained healthcare professionals.

Eligibility Criteria for ICSP

To qualify for ICSP, applicants must meet the following requirements:

For Internship:

  • Hold a recognized health-related degree (e.g., MBChB, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry).
  • Be registered as a student or intern with the relevant council (HPCSA/SANC).
  • Have completed theoretical training from an accredited institution.

For Community Service:

  • Have successfully completed internship training (where applicable).
  • Be registered with the HPCSA/SANC as a community service practitioner.
  • Be a South African citizen/permanent resident (foreign applicants may have additional requirements).

Required Documents for Registration

Before starting the registration process, ensure you have the following documents:

  • Certified copy of ID/passport
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificate
  • Proof of registration with HPCSA/SANC
  • Internship completion certificate (for community service applicants)
  • Updated CV
  • Proof of residence (if required for placement)

(Note: Some documents may need to be certified by a commissioner of oaths.)
