What is UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance fund (UIF) is a public entity of the Department of Employment and Labour which provides short-term relief to workers when they become unemployed or are unable to work because of maternity, adoption leave, illness, paternity, and also to provide relief to the dependants of the deceased contributors.

How Many Months Does UIF Pay Out?

UIF can be claimed for 12 months, provided that you have full credit days. Credits accrue as follows: for every four days that you work as a contributor, you receive one day’s credit, subject to a maximum of 12 months.

To qualify for the full credit days you must have worked as a contributor for more than four years. The rates at which the benefits are payable is accordance with the scale of benefits which ranges between 38-60% for the first 238 credit days and then from 239 to 365 days at flat rate of 20%. Low income earners receive a higher percentage.

Does UIF pay the same amount every month?

No, UIF payments are not a fixed same amount each month. The payment amount is calculated based on the worker’s previous earnings, with the maximum payment being 38% of the worker’s earnings subject to a cap of R17,712 per month. The payment amount may therefore differ from month to month based on the worker’s previous earnings.

What is the maximum UIF payout per month in South Africa?

The maximum UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) payment in South Africa is based on a capped salary level per month, with the highest possible payout being 58% of this capped salary.

  1. Maximum Salary Level: As of the latest update, the maximum level is R17,712 per month. This means that even if you earn more than this amount, your UIF benefits will be calculated based on the R17,712 cap.
  2. Percentage Payout: The UIF benefit is calculated at a sliding scale, up to a maximum of 58% of your salary, depending on your earnings. Lower-income earners receive a higher percentage of their earnings compared to higher-income earners.
  • Maximum Monthly Payout: 58% of R17,712, which equals approximately R10,273 per month.

Note: These figures are subject to change, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest information from the Department of Employment and Labour or the UIF directly.
