Who Qualifies for Disability Grant?

These grants are made after the individual application and their medical checkup. These payments are made to those who come under this qualification criteria. That includes:

  • The recipient needs to be a South African permanent resident with a recognized refugee.
  • Age must be under the age group of 19 to 59 years.
  • Need to own an identification document.
  • Not receiving any other social grants other than personal social grants.
  • You and your spouse are required to relent with a means test.
  • Needs to be unfit to do work due to disability for for than 6 months period that can be physical or mental
  • If disability stops you from doing work for more than 12 months, then you will be considered permanently disabled.
  • Needs to bring your previous medical reports and records to receive the disability grants.
  • To access as a disabled you are required to undergo a medical evaluation through the doctor designated.
  • If you are single, your total assets need to be below R 1,227,600, and for marital, your total assets need to be under R2,455,200.
  • Yearly income needs to be under R 86,280 for single or marital annual income is required to be under R 172,560.

These are some qualifies criteria to receive disability grants from SASSA.

How to Apply for the SASSA Disability Grant

Applying for the SASSA Disability Grant involves a systematic process that requires careful attention to detail. Here’s an expanded breakdown of each step involved:

1. Medical Assessment

The first step in applying for the Disability Grant is to obtain a medical assessment report. This involves:

  • Scheduling an Appointment: Contact a SASSA office or state hospital to schedule an appointment with a state-appointed doctor or a medical officer.
  • What to Expect During the Assessment: The doctor will evaluate your condition to determine the extent of your disability and its impact on your ability to work. It’s crucial to be prepared to discuss your medical history and current health status comprehensively.
  • Obtaining the Report: After the assessment, the medical officer will complete a medical report that serves as crucial documentation for your application. Ensure this report is detailed and accurately reflects your condition.

2. Documentation

Gathering the right documentation is essential for a successful application:

  • Essential Documents: Apart from a valid South African ID and proof of residence, you may also need to provide additional information such as marriage certificates, divorce papers (if applicable), and any other relevant documents that can affect your financial assessment.
  • Organizing Your Documents: Keep copies of all documents and organize them neatly in a file. This can expedite the process when you submit your application.

3. Submission

Applications must be submitted personally for verification purposes:

  • Visiting the SASSA Office: Locate the nearest SASSA office to your residence. It’s advisable to visit early as queues can be long.
  • Application Form: On your visit, you’ll receive an application form to fill out. Assistance is usually available if you have trouble filling out the form.
  • Interview: A SASSA official may conduct a brief interview during your visit to clarify your situation and the information provided in your application.

4. Means Test

The means test is a critical component of the application:

  • Purpose: This test assesses your income and assets to determine if you meet the financial criteria set by SASSA.
  • What to Disclose: You must disclose all forms of income, including rental income, pensions, or income from dependents. Transparency is essential to avoid any delays or denials based on inaccurate information.

5. Review and Approval

After submission, the review process begins:

  • Review Period: Typically, the review process can take up to three months. During this period, SASSA may request additional information or documentation.
  • Notification of Decision: You will be notified by mail or SMS regarding the status of your application. If approved, the grant will be backdated to the day you applied.
  • Appeal Process: If your application is denied, SASSA will provide reasons, and you have the right to appeal this decision within 90 days.

Grant Amount and Payment Methods

The SASSA Disability Grant offers up to R2 180 per month, though this amount is subject to change. Payments can be received through direct bank deposit, cash at designated pay points, or institutions not funded by the state.

When may your grant be suspended?

The following may result in the suspension of your grant:

  • when your circumstances change
  • the outcome of a review
  • if you fail to co-operate when your grant is reviewed
  • when you commit fraud or misrepresent yourself
  • if there was a mistake when your grant was approved.

When may your grant lapse?

The grant will lapse when you:

  • pass away
  • are admitted to a state institution
  • do not claim for three consecutive months
  • are absent from the country.

Please note: If you are admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to care for you, the grant is reduced to 25% of the maximum amount of the  grant. That will be done with effect from the fourth month following your admission to that institution. The reduced grant is re-instated immediately from the date you are discharged from the institution.
