Is Victoria Falls the World’s Biggest Waterfall?

It is the largest waterfall in the world, with a total of 1 708 meters (5 604 feet) in breadth and 108 meters (354 feet) in height. Venezuela’s Angel Falls are narrower but also higher. Its width and height are both double those of Niagara Falls, yet unlike Niagara, it has beautiful national parks on either side.

When Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone first saw the Falls in 1855, he had no idea that they would one day be recognized as the largest waterfall in the world, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders, and a World Heritage Site.

There hasn’t been much change since mankind first discovered Mosi-oa-Tunya thousands of years ago; what you see now is the same breathtaking view that astounded Livingstone and anybody else fortunate enough to visit the Falls.

From around February to July is high-water season, when visitors may enjoy the most breathtaking views of the Falls and should be prepared to get a little wet. The greatest time to engage in activities like white-water rafting and swimming in Devil’s Pool is during the low-water season, which lasts roughly from August to January.

A good time to combine a safari with a trip to Victoria Falls is between June and October, which is the high or peak season for safaris. Remember that the waterfall will be dryer the later you visit. Generally speaking, July and August are the “sweet spot” for a terrific safari and stunning scenery. At the same time, these months are particularly popular travel times. It is best to make reservations much in advance.

Which Side is Best: Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Zambia?

This is dependent on the season, your financial situation, and your interests. Each side has advantages over the other. In general, and especially during the low water season, the views of the falls are better from the Zimbabwean side. But you can only visit Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool or Angel’s Pool on the Zambian side during low water season, which is also the greatest time to go. For customers on a tight budget, the Zimbabwean side offers better lodging options; for those with a larger budget, the Zambian side offers better lodging possibilities.

There is a direct flight from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit, close to Kruger Park, to Livingstone on specific days of the week, which is a logistical benefit of the Zambian side. This means that when visiting both the Zambian side of Victoria Falls and Kruger Park, you do not need to pass via Johannesburg.

Be careful to purchase a Kaza Univisa, which permits you numerous entrances into both Zimbabwe and Zambia and makes crossing the border more easier, if you intend to visit both sides of the falls. As an alternative, think about obtaining a multiple or double-entry visa at your port of entry. More affordable than applying for two single-entry visas

Victoria Falls offers a wide range of activities, and the majority of them may be enjoyed from either side, with the exception of a few special experiences on either side.

The Zimbabwe side

Many people believe that the Zimbabwean side provides the best vantage point for viewing the falls, especially during the low water period. The entry to the rainforest, where guests must first pay their park fees, leads to the falls. A café, information desk, and gift store are located at the entrance. You can access the numerous vantage points at the gorge’s brink via a network of paved walkways. While the Zambian side includes many steps, these walkways are accessible to wheelchair users.

In the years between 2000 and 2010 while Zimbabwe was experiencing an economic crisis, Zambia’s tourism industry saw significant growth. Livingstone became the go-to place for tourists visiting Victoria Falls when numerous new hotels were constructed. The abundance of beautiful lodges and hotels built right on the edge of the Zambezi River, upstream from the falls, is one advantage of the Zambian side. There aren’t many hotels with easy access to the Zambezi River on the Zimbabwe side.
