Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) is a dynamic non-governmental organisation that addresses the health and human rights of sex workers.

SWEAT seeks to appoint a Sisonke M&E, National Membership and Communications Officer based to be based in Cape Town.

The purpose of the position is to ensure that Sisonke maintains its membership database, communicates regularly with its members and stakeholders and maintains the active involvement of Sisonke membership in Sisonke activities, planning and in developing strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Membership Database:
    • Ensure lapsed members are notified, and renewals of memberships processed in the database
    • Update the database when members contacts change
    • Report to the National Coordinator on a monthly basis, the growth of members, disaggregating membership by location, gender and working modality (indoor/street based)
    • Reconcile number of new numbers with amounts deposited on the account with the Finance Officer
  • Monitoring and evaluation:
    • Capture from all Sisonke provinces into the Sisonke database
    • Liaise with provincial coordinators to get supporting documents for reported data
    • Assist in developing workshop material aimed at strengthening Sisonke’s monitoring and evaluation based on data trend analysis
    • Assist in filing and archiving of Sisonke source documents (electronic and hard copies)
    • Write and submit the M & E report to the Funders
  • Recruitment of New Sisonke members:
    • Take overall responsibility for developing membership recruitment strategies, communicating with Provincial Coordinators on membership drives
    • Ensure that strategies to recruit members take place regularly and provide support for such activities
  • Communications and Media Relations:
    • Develop a media contact list, write and distribute press releases
    • Develop and maintain consistent media relations
    • Develop consistent social media messaging- Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube
    • Website management- development of content for Sisonke website and editing of documents
    • Develop and coordinate a quarterly newsletter and doing training with the reporters
    • Develop a communications strategy for communications with members across the country
    • Develop content relevant to members and communicate with members via SMS or other mediums
    • Deal with any complaints or questions from interested sex workers or existing members
    • Liaison with organisations that deliver services to sex workers, ensuring they have information about Sisonke, access to Sisonke materials, and that they refer interested sex workers for membership
    • Media training and public speaking with the Sisonke media Liaisons and sex workers
  • Reporting:
    • Submit monthly activity reports and statistics of membership to the National Coordinator
    • Middle Management Roles:
    • Develop and place advertisements for new employees
    • Shortlist and conduct interviews of new employees
    • Attend to employee matters in the absence of the Sisonke National and Assistant National Coordinator
  •  Other:
    • Provision of office support; procurement of membership golf shirts, staff uniform, communications and office equipment
    • Provide logistical support to Sisonke national staff in support of activities
    • Participate in the development of strategy, funding proposals or other activities in support of Sisonke governance, and sustainability
    • Assist with reporting to donors, especially with regard to membership numbers and activities to build membership.
    • Support Sisonke as needed, responding to instructions from the National Coordinator

Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years working experience in an office context, preferably in a non-profit or in sex work context
  • Communication skills verbal as well as written
  • Ability to read and write English and at least one other South African language
  • Ability to travel if and when needed
  • Knowledge of the sex work sector
  • Experience as a peer educator or similar position in an NGO
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Social Media, Internet and E-mail
  • Experience in data capturing and data management
  • An ability to work in a team
  • Qualification in M&E or Media will be advantageous.
