School Entry Requirements to Study at the University of the Free State UFS for 2022/2023 academic year The University of the Free State UFS Admission requirements vary depending on the type of the course you’re applying for, the academic level, your nationality. UFS Admission requirements – courses and entry requirements

Entry requirements for Admission in the University of the Free State UFS vary with each course or program. It’s important you understand the qualifications needed for the course you wish to pursue.

Below are the admission entry requirements for various programs at the University of the Free State UFS:

For degree studies at the University of the Free State, we expect that:

  • You have an NSC or NCV with an endorsement that allows entrance to degree studies (Bachelor’s degree) or an equivalent qualification.
  • You meet all the minimum admission requirements for the programme you intend to study. Meeting the minimum admission requirements for your chosen/intended programme of study does not guarantee admission, as limited spaces are available in each programme.
  • You have a minimum level of 4 (50%) in the chosen UFS language of instruction: English or Afrikaans (only applicable to certain programmes).
  • You must pass certain school subjects with a minimum level of achievement in order to take a certain university module. For example, you must get a mark of 70% for Mathematics in Grade 12 if you plan to study BSc majoring in Physics with Engineering subjects. Please refer to the section on the faculty-specific admission requirements, which also includes the respective compulsory subjects and achievement levels required per programme.

It is important that you thoroughly study the admission requirements of the programmes you are interested in. The UFS calculates your AP score based on the NSC achievement scale. An AP score consisting of seven levels is used. Points will be awarded for six academic subjects (note: no points will be awarded for achievement levels lower than 30%). One point is awarded for Life Orientation from achievement level 5 (60%) or higher when calculating your AP score for admission purposes.

To calculate your AP, you can use the following example:
For five (5) academic subjects, you must obtain a level 5 (60%)5 x 5 = 25
For one (1) further academic subject, you must obtain a level 4 (50%)1 x 4 = 4
For Life Orientation, a level of 5 (60%) or higher to score 1 point1 x 1 = 1

UFS entry requirements for Higher Certificate

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi).

Institutional and programme needs may require appropriate combinations of recognized NSC subjects and levels of achievement. For example, an institution may determine that a Higher Certificate in Architectural Design requires in addition to the NSC a specified level of attainment in Design and an associated recognized subject.’

UFS entry requirements for Diploma

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects. institutional and programme needs may require appropriate combinations of recognized National Senior Certificate subjects and levels of achievement. For example, a Diploma in Data metrics might require a pass at a prescribed level in Mathematics or Information Technology.

UFS entry requirements for Bachelor’s Degree

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the following recognized 20-credit NSC subject
