The Act provides a national legislative framework for the provision of different types of social grants, social relief of distress, the delivery of social assistance grants by a national Agency and the establishment of an Inspectorate for Social Security.

South African Social Security Agency Act, 2004
The Act provides for the establishment of the South African Social Security Agency as a schedule 3A public entity in terms of the PFMA. The principle aim of the Act is to make provision for the effective management, administration and payment of social assistance and service through the establishment of the South African Social Security Agency. The President signed the Act on the 28th May 2004.

Social Grant Forms

Sassa Care Dependency Grant

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • The applicant and child must be resident in South Africa.
  • Child must be under the age of 18 years.
  • The applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.
  • The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test (except for foster parents.
  • The care-dependent child/children must not be permanently cared for in a State Institution.

Sassa Child Support Grant

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The primary care giver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • Both the applicant and the child must reside in South Africa.
  • The applicant must be the primary care giver of the child/ children concerned.
  • The child/children must been born after 31 December 1993.
  • The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
  • Child can not apply for more than six non biological children.
  • Child can not be cared for in state institution.

Sassa Disability Grant

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • The applicant must be resident in South Africa.
  • The applicant must be 18 to 59 years of age.
  • The applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.
  • The applicant’s medical assessment must not be older than 3 months at date of application.
  • The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
  • The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
  • The applicant must not be in receipt of another social grant in respect of him or herself.

The special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant The President declared a National State of Disaster as a result of the Covid-19 global pandemic. In this regard he introduced a special Covid 19 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) of R350 per month for 6 months to be paid to individuals who are currently unemployed, do not receive any form of income, social grant or UIF payment etc. This Social Relief of Distress Programme was confirmed in the Regulations made under Section 27(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002): Measures to prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19, as amended.
Applicants will need to provide the following information

  • Identity Number or Department of Home Affairs Refugee permit number
  • Name and Surname as captured in the Identity Document
  • Gender and Disability
  • Contact details – Cell phone number
  • Residential Address
Important to note Applicants will have to sign a declaration and consent to their information being validated and shared with other organisations and financial institutions such as SARS and banks. How do I change my banking details If you are an approved beneficiary of the SASSA SRD R350 Grant and you wish to change your banking details, please submit your ID Number below. An SMS containing a secure link, unique to you, will be sent to the mobile phone number with which you registered during application. Click on the link in the SMS and follow the instructions carefully. Should you select payment into a bank account, please ensure that you are the owner of the account. SASSA cannot pay your grant into another person’s bank account. Should you select the money transfer option via one of the major banks, please ensure that the mobile phone number on which you received the SMS is registered in your name. SASSA cannot pay your grant into a mobile phone number which is registered to another person. Please also note that the new banking details will only be used for future payments, after verification.
