You will be given a total of 30 questions on driving regulations, 30 questions on road traffic signs (signs, signals, and markings), and 8 questions on vehicle controls at random from a test bank of more than 1200 questions. To pass the test, you must receive an individual score of 22/30 for driving laws, 23/30 for traffic signs on the road, and 6/8 for vehicle controls. Failure in any of the aforementioned categories will result in a test failure overall.
1) Department of Transport: Learner’s Licence Manual
It is extremely important that you use the Department of Transport’s Learner’s Licence Manual and not just a K53 Learner’s License book (available from shops like CNA, etc.) if your Learner’s Licence test will be administered on a computer (which many testing stations across the country do), as there are many new questions in the computerized test that are derived from this manual and you won’t find them in any of the other books.
You should compare this handbook to a K53 Learner’s License book because it has certain typing errors (frequently the incorrect description for an image, etc.). Unfortunately, the Department of Transport has only released this version (a draft version) thus far.

You can get different K53 Learner’s Licence books offline at reputable stationery stores like CNA or online at sites like loot.co.za and takealot.com. These books are excellent for helping you get ready for the learner’s permit test, but if you plan to take the computerized test, you need also utilize the learner’s permit manual from the Department of Transportation. Many of the test’s questions are drawn from the Department’s manual, which is not included in the material in the books that are sold in bookstores.
