SAEP is looking for an energetic, organised and experienced bookkeeper / financial accountant who follows a systematic and consistent approach to bookkeeping and reporting. We need someone who is experienced in non-profit work, hard-working, eager to learn and interested in the education environment. Candidates must be willing to take on the role for a minimum period of 2 years, starting as soon as possible.

Overall objectives of the role

  • Financial record keeping is accurate and complete
  • Ensure the financial systems, policies and procedures are in place and are adhered to
  • Ensure that the organisation has an annual, realistic and approved budget in place before the start of the new year
  • Monitor the annual budget and report on variances
  • Ensure that Board and staff members are informed about the organisation’s financial situation at all times
  • Ensure financial and tax compliance according to legislation.
  • Monitor cash flow and inform relevant departments
  • Assist Fundraising with financial donor information and reports
  • Ensure good relationships with financial stakeholders

Qualifications and skills required

  • Accounting degree, preferably B.Com.
  • Essential requirements:
    • At least 3 years of experience in bookkeeping and accounting, with responsibility for routine financial tasks as well as financial reporting and budget preparation
    • Excellent computer literacy, including advanced Excel competency
    • Knowledge of QuickBooks, or similar system
    • Knowledge of VAT submission process and SARS e-filing
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Planning and time management, and ability meet deadlines
    • Accuracy and attention to detail
  •     Experience working in financial management in the non-profit sector

Responsibilities

  • Daily bookkeeping
  • Filing and organising accounting records
  • Manage petty cash
  • Review monthly management accounts
  • Manage restricted funding
  • Set up and authorise payments
  • Prepare annual budget and presentation for Director and Board
  • Monitor budget vs actual each month
  • Prepare monthly report for Director and Board and present at board meetings
  • Monitor and manage cash flow
  • Work with programme managers and coordinators to understand and manage programme costs
  • Prepare files and documentation for auditors and attend to audit queries
  • Prepare and complete relevant SARS, VAT, UIF and other filings
  • Manage the payroll and related matters
  • Liaise with fundraising and prepare financial information required by external funders
  • Manage relationships with banks and all banking activities
