Communications Specialist: TeachersCAN and Parents Empowerment Initiative

Parents and teachers play a critical role in the educational journey of South Africa’s children. When empowered, they can use their agency to shape the education system and ultimately the learning experience of South African children.

With that in mind, the DGMT is incubating 2 initiatives focused on building the agency of parents and teachers.

The Parent Empowerment Initiative aims to support parents to:

  • demand quality education for their children and accountability for their learning;
  • build their shared identity as valued and active stakeholders in children’s education; and
  • leverage “ordinary magic” for the benefit of their children.

The Teachers’ Change Agent Network (TeachersCAN) seeks to build an empowered network of young teachers who:

  • are driven by the goal to enable all learners to reach their potential and
  • find a common identity rooted in professionalism, creativity and disruption of the status quo.

Position:

While both projects are in the emergent phase, the DGMT is recruiting a Communication Specialist to work across the 2 initiatives. As the Communications Specialist supporting the Parent Empowerment Initiative and the TeachersCAN Network, the successful candidate will take on the following responsibilities:

  • Develop, design and execute the overall communications strategy for the Parent Empowerment Initiative and TeachersCAN;
  • Work with the Parent Empowerment Initiative and TeachersCAN team to develop content for public communication that:
    • Builds the identity of parents and teachers as powerful actors;
    • Surfaces relevant stories of lived experiences of parents and teachers;
    • Drives public awareness of key issues through public media channels (print, radio and television); and
    • Frames key issues and solutions for decision-makers
  • Support the development of written publications and reports

Requirements:

At a minimum, the candidate must have:

  • a relevant degree – in journalism, media and communications, or social sciences;
  • 5 years’ experience in a similar field;
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;

Preferably, the candidate has:

  • fluency in two or more South African languages
  • Proven ability to engage with the media.
  • A background in advocacy work
  • the ability to support content development across different mediums (visual, audio, written)
  • A valid driver’s license.

The ideal candidate has the following attributes, they:

  • have strong analytical abilities;
  • consider issues at a strategic level;
  • can use communication to galvanize the public on the improvement of educational experiences and systems

This is a 12 month, fixed-term, contract with possibility of renewal. Salary negotiable based on skills and experience. The position is based in Cape Town.
