A new fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and himself is coming up.According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the former boxer will compete against MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura in Japan this September, marking his second exhibition there since quitting professional boxing five years ago.
Tenshin Nasukawa, a Japanese kickboxer, was Mayweather’s opponent when they met in this country in 2018. Nasukawa was left in tears after the bout was stopped by his team because Mayweather arrived two hours late.
“Everything centred on entertainment. Having fun “After the fight, Mayweather remarked, “Ever the salesperson.” “You guys in Tokyo, Japan, have been incredible. I’m grateful.”
The fact that Mayweather reportedly earned $9 million from the demonstration definitely helped with the sales pitch.
While Mayweather seemed to enjoy himself, many viewers of that bout saw through the show; Mayweather’s demonstration versus Mikuru is probably not going to be any different. While Mayweather has a perfect boxing record of 50-0, Mikuru has an MMA record of 16-3-1 and presently competes in the Rizin promotion.
Like when he faced Conor McGregor and Tenshin, Mayweather clearly benefits from the fight being held under boxing rules.
Given that Mikuru weighs between 145 and 150 pounds while Tenshin is closer to 125 pounds, Mikuru will have a significant size and weight advantage. Mayweather competed till the end of his career in the welterweight class (140-147 pounds).
