SASSA Disability Grant

The SASSA Disability Grant is an established initiative that seeks to provide assistance to people who are living with disabilities. The value of the grant is R2,090 every month. The disability grant has two classifications depending on the period of the disability:

Permanent Disability Grant

The Permanent Disability Grant is meant for the incapacitated individuals who are more than likely to suffer from their disability for one year and beyond. In this regard, SASSA offers a R2,090 monthly grant to individuals in need or facing such a predicament.

Temporary Disability Grant

The Temporary Disability Grant is a form of assistance targeted for individuals whose disability is temporary and cannot exceed 12 months. In addition, this grant also avails monthly support of R2,090 to alleviate your stress during recovery.

To apply for the Disability Grant, you need to provide SASSA with the following documents:

  • ID documents for permanent residents.
  • 13-digit refugee ID for refugees.
  • Proof of residency in South Africa.
  • Bank statement for the last three months.
  • Proof of marital status if you are married or divorced.
  • Proof of private pension if applicable.
  • Proof of what you own, like the value of your property, as determined by the local government.
  • Doctor’s reports and an assessment showing your disability.

Eligibility Criteria for the SASSA Disability Grant

To be eligible for the SASSA Disability Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee.
  • You must be between 18 to 59 years old.
  • You must not be residing in a government-funded institution for long-term care.
  • You must have a disability that is either short-term or long-term.
  • You must pass the Sassa means test.
  • You must undergo a medical examination by a state-appointed doctor.
  • You must not be receiving another social grant from Sassa.
  • You must not be receiving care in a state institution.

How much is the SASSA Disability Grant Amount?

According to the latest updates of 1 April 2024, the monthly amount for disability grant is R2 180 per month (per person). The value of disability grant is calculated on a sliding scale, meaning that people with the lowest private income will receive the highest grant amount. This is because the grant is meant to provide financial assistance to disabled persons who have a low income. As the private income of the grant’s applicant increases, the grant amount will be decreased.

The grant amount will increase to R2,090 per person per month from 1 October 2024.
