Your complete guide to the Queen’s funeral

The late Queen Elizabeth II’s remains has finally left the country as part of a lavish state funeral after laying in state for many days. The body was taken to Windsor Castle for a more private burial in the evening after travelling to Westminster Abbey for a religious service in front of hundreds of people.

It has been a day filled with emotion, grandeur, and ceremony unseen since Winston Churchill’s last state burial nearly 60 years ago. According to Buckingham Palace, the Queen added her own modifications to the plans.

Here’s how the day’s events unfolded.

08:00

Early in the morning, the Queen’s lying-in-state in Westminster Hall in the centre of London, where people had lined up for hours to see her coffin, came to an end. Doors at Westminster Abbey, a short distance away, then opened for visitors to begin arriving before the burial service at 11:00.

To commemorate the Queen’s life and service, heads of state from around the world flew in to join members of the Royal Family. There were also prominent British politicians and past prime ministers.

Many of the attendees, who belonged to royal families from across Europe, were blood relatives of the Queen.

In preparation for her funeral service, the Queen’s coffin was removed from the catafalque in Westminster Hall, where it had been since Wednesday afternoon.

She was transported to the abbey aboard the Royal Navy’s State Gun Carriage, which was hauled by 142 sailors. The funeral for Lord Mountbatten, Prince Philip’s uncle, was held in the carriage in 1979, and it had previously been used for the death of the Queen’s father, George VI, in 1952.

The Royal Standard, the Imperial State Crown, the Sovereign’s orb and sceptre, as well as a wreath made of flowers and foliage chosen by the King and taken from Buckingham Palace and the King’s residences of Clarence House and Highgrove, are placed on the coffin of the late Queen.

The new king and his sons Prince William and Prince Harry led the Royal Family’s senior members in a march behind the gun carriage.

Along with Gurkhas and members of the Royal Air Force, the ceremonial is led by the pipes and drums of the Scottish and Irish regiments.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines lined the route, and in Parliament Square, the three military branches formed a guard of honour while a Royal Marines band played.

At her state funeral, which was held at Westminster Abbey and attended by 2,000 people, the Queen’s enduring sense of duty was remembered.

A military parade is one of the severe etiquette requirements for a state burial, which is normally only held for kings or queens.

The traditional church where Britain’s kings and queens are crowned, including the Queen’s own coronation in 1953, is the abbey, which is hosting the funeral service. In 1947, the then-Princess Elizabeth wed Prince Philip there as well.

Although the Queen Mother’s burial was held there in 2002, there hasn’t been a royal funeral service there since the 18th century.

David Hoyle, the Dean of Westminster, presided over the service, and Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, delivered the sermon. Liz Truss, the prime minister, read a lesson.

The Queen’s “unwavering dedication to a high calling over so many years as Queen and Head of the Commonwealth” was mentioned by the Dean as he opened the service.

One of the songs was “The Lord’s my shepherd,” which was sung to the Crimond tune and has its roots in an Aberdeenshire parish close to the Queen’s Balmoral estate, where she passed away. The hymn was also sung at the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s nuptials.

11:55

The Last Post, a brief bugle call played toward the close of the funeral service, was followed by a two-minute period of national quiet.

Just after noon, the service came to a close with the playing of the national anthem and a lament by the Queen’s piper.

12:15

Following that, a walking procession carrying the Queen’s coffin was led from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch in London’s Hyde Park Corner.

Big Ben rang out at one-minute intervals as the parade slowly made its way through the streets of the nation’s capital, which was surrounded by military and law enforcement personnel. From Hyde Park, gun salutes were fired every minute.

Crowds of mourners lined the path to get a view of the military procession, which included hundreds of service members and covered more than a mile.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police led the march, which included seven different organisations, each of which had its own band. There were participants from the police, the NHS, and members of the armed forces from the UK and the Commonwealth.

The Royal Family, including the King, continued to follow the gun carriage carrying the Queen’s coffin.
The Countess of Wessex, the Duchess of Sussex, the Princess of Wales, the Queen Consort, and Camilla all rode in cars to join the parade.

The coffin was subsequently moved to the new State Hearse at Wellington Arch before making its last trip to Windsor Castle. As the car passed, throngs flung flowers in its direction.

The Queen had a special connection to Windsor Castle throughout her lifetime because it had been a permanent residence for 40 kings and queens for approximately 1,000 years. She was transported to the castle as an adolescent during the war because London was in danger of being bombed, and more recently she made it her permanent residence because of the coronavirus outbreak.

15:00

Just after 5:00 p.m., the hearse arrived in Windsor and headed up the Long Walk leading to Windsor Castle.

The three-mile (five-kilometer) boulevard was lined with people and military personnel.

In Windsor Castle’s Quadrangle, the King and senior members of the Royal Family joined the cortege.

Every minute, the Sebastopol and Curfew Tower bells of the castle tolled, and salutes were fired from the grounds of the building.

16:00

The coffin arrived at St. George’s Chapel shortly after 16:00 for the committal service.

The Royal Family frequently chooses St. George’s Chapel as the location for weddings, christenings, and funerals. Prince Harry and Meghan became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex there in 2018, and the Queen’s late husband Prince Philip was buried there.

The committal service was conducted by Dean of Windsor David Conner with benediction from Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby in front of a smaller, more intimate congregation of roughly 800 people.

The majority of the congregation at the ceremony, which was attended by present and past members of the Queen’s household and private estates, observed customs signifying the conclusion of her reign.

The Crown Jeweller detached the Queen from her crown for the last time by removing the Imperial State Crown, the Sovereign’s orb, and sceptre from the top of the coffin.

The King then draped the Grenadier Guards’ Queen’s Company camp colour, or flag, over the casket after the final hymn. The oldest Foot Guards performing ceremonial responsibilities for the king are the Grenadier Guards.

Baron Parker, the former head of MI5, who was the Lord Chamberlain at the time, “broke” his wand of office and laid it on the coffin. His tenure as the monarch’s highest ranking member of the Royal Household will come to an end with the snap of the white staff.

The Sovereign’s piper then played while the Queen was lowered into the crypt, followed by a blessing and the singing of God Save the King. According to Buckingham Palace, the Queen personally requested that the piper perform at Windsor.
