Visit the prison
The prison was erected by Lloyd Mathews in 1893. The plan for the prison was to transport violent offenders from Tanganyika’s mainland to Prison Island. Instead of being a prison, the Prison Island ended up being used as a quarantine facility for yellow fever epidemics that once ravaged the area.
