DSTV Premiership Match Schedules for the Orlando Pirates in 2022 and 2023
They are one of just two South African teams, along with Mamelodi Sundowns, to win the CAF Champions League, which they did in 1995. The other South African team to achieve so is Amazulu. They finished in second place in the CAF Confederation Cup in both 2015 and 2021-22.
The Pirates have an all-time record of 33 trophies and have won a total of 9 league titles since the franchise’s foundation. With all of their previous victories, it should come as no surprise that Orlando Pirates is considered to be one of the top clubs in all of Africa.
History
The Orlando Pirates are one of the oldest football clubs in South Africa. The club was founded in 1937 in the neighborhood of Orlando East in Soweto. [2][6] Young players have been motivated by the accomplishments of the club over the course of its history to work toward the goal of playing “the Beautiful Game” at the best level possible while representing the black and white colors of the “Buccaneers.”
Early years
Some of the founders of Orlando Pirates were the children of migrant workers who had relocated to the gold mines of Gauteng in order to find work. Their parents had come from rural areas. Young men in Orlando took advantage of any free time they had to play football in open areas and in ad hoc teams whenever the opportunity presented itself. The first iteration of the club was known as the Orlando Boys Club.
In 1940, Bethuel Mokgosinyane, who would later serve as the club’s first president, used his own money to purchase the initial squad uniforms. The Orlando Boys competed in the Johannesburg Bantu Association’s Saturday League, where they were victorious in the Division Two competition and earned promotion to the Division One level the following year, 1944. The main member of the squad, Andrew Bassie, was the one who suggested changing the team’s name to the Orlando Pirates. The group was responsible for writing the camp’s battle cry, which was known as “Ezimnyama Ngenkani.”
