How to APPLY for a smart ID online in South Africa A million South Africans will soon need to submit an online application for a smart ID. Following the illegal blocking of hundreds of thousands of ID numbers that it deemed to be false, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) did this.

But let’s imagine you’re one of them, or your ID was stolen or cloned, and you now need to submit an online application for a smart ID. What services do you provide and what does it cost? All of our responses are provided below.

The DHA released South Africa’s Smart ID card in 2013, taking the place of the infamous “green mamba” ID booklet. According to the DHA, those who are still using the obsolete green mambas will actually need to apply for a smart ID online by the end of 2023 because the booklets would be phased out the next year.

You must be a South African citizen and be 16 years of age or older to apply for a smart ID online. To prove your identity, you will need to present your old green ID booklet, a driver’s license, or a passport. In some cases, if you were born abroad, a passport or foreign identification card issued by the nation where you were born will be acceptable.

WHAT DOCUMENTS TO YOU NEED?

The following documents must be submitted when you apply for a smart ID online in South Africa (if you have them). This prevents identity cloning by preventing the use of maliciously outdated identification documents:

  • Green ID booklet.
  • Ezoic.
  • Birth certificate for new applicant.
  • Travel or ID documents from the old Transkei, Bophutatswana, Venda, or Ciskei homelands.
  • Documentation verifying a legal guardian in case of adoption.
  • Your parents’ IDs.
  • Your parent’s death certificates for any or all deceased parents.
  • Proof of address (eg. a utility bill with your name and address on it).
  • Permanent resident certificate for those born elsewhere.
  • Sworn and signed police affidavit and police case number if you lost or had your ID document stolen.
  • Any 16-year-old first-time applicants can apply for a smart ID online for FREE.
  • The cost to apply for a smart ID online is R140 if you are old than 16-years of age, are replacing your green mamba ID, or replacing a lost/stolen Smart ID card.
