Many families in Sub-Saharan Africa are progressively switching to DTH (Direct-To-Home) systems for their news and entertainment needs. Tanzania is an example of a Sub-Saharan African nation that has abandoned terrestrial entertainment in favor of satellite as its main source of broadcasting technology.

Today, more than 56% of Tanzanian homes have access to satellite TV, and AZAM TV, the top operator in the nation, provides entertainment to 81 % of those homes. Powered by Eutelsat, AZAM TV has expanded to 1.4 million homes and cemented its position as Tanzania’s go-to broadcaster.

Before becoming the top national operator and choosing Eutelsat as their provider, AZAM TV had to overcome a number of obstacles. Let’s explore how AZAM rose to prominence in Tanzanian broadcasting from being a new competitor in a highly competitive sector.

The Bakhresa Group, one of the top industrial houses in Tanzania, East Africa, includes AZAM TV. The Bakhresa Group owns and manages a sizable number of retail locations and businesses that sell goods in all of Tanzania. Numerous businesses fall under its purview, and it invests mostly in the packaging, logistics, marine passenger services, petroleum, and entertainment industries. Their first venture into television-based entertainment was AZAM TV.

Tanzanians were not generally open to watching television as a form of entertainment, especially pay-TV, when AZAM TV set out to introduce a new satellite television package there in 2013. The availability of disposable income, video streaming, and general technology was very restricted nationwide. Additionally, well-established broadcasters that relied on terrestrial modes of communication already served the Tanzanian market. To succeed in this market, AZAM TV had to offer premium content at a competitive price without sacrificing digital signal reception. However, in a nation where only 25% of the population was served by DTT in 2014, this would be difficult.

Additionally, the locals who had TVs were looking for alternative forms of entertainment. Tanzanians are increasingly interested in local programs, including dramas and series, as they are dissatisfied with the ready-made content that is currently available, such as American soap operas and movies, which are the norm in Africa. To take advantage of this, AZAM TV sought to establish its own studio, giving them total command over all operations and the ability to offer clients the highest level of service. They were a new entrant in the industry, however, and lacked the resources and knowledge necessary to completely build a sound plan for marketing, distribution, and technological reach.

In order to enter this market successfully, AZAM TV needed assistance from a seasoned and qualified source.

In 2013, AZAM TV and Eutelsat met at Africacom. When AZAM TV learned about Eutelsat’s unparalleled satellite coverage of Tanzania, it started working with the company to find a solution.

It was evident that Eutelsat possessed the coverage and DTH expertise necessary to allow AZAM TV to expand throughout East and Sub-Saharan Africa. With a full transponder being added to EUTELSAT 7B in 2015, the first contract was made for 108 MHz on the 7Β° East-located satellite EUTELSAT 7A.

500 installers were taught in just over two weeks thanks to Eutelsat’s assistance in helping AZAM create an installer training curriculum using its experience with satellite dish installation. On December 6th, 2013, Tanzania and five other Eastern African nations (Uganda, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, and Sierra Leone) introduced the first bouquet of 55 channels, primarily in Swahili and English, at a cost similar to $8 USD.

However, Tanzania’s lack of accessibility was always going to be a problem. With the option of subscriptions being available for purchase in shops or by mobile credit, AZAM TV was able to overcome this obstacle thanks to a creative business move.

For the first time in the nation, subscribers may access and tune-in to AZAM TV by paying via their cellphones. Additionally, AZAM TV was able to offer subscriptions to their service through shops all throughout the nation because to the enormous distribution network supported by the Bakhresa Group.

The dependability of AZAM TV’s transmission, supported by Eutelsat’s satellite fleet, earned them the exclusive rights to broadcast football matches in Tanzania, including those from the Vodacom Premier League, the AZAM Uganda Premier League, and other top teams in the area. AZAM increased the scope of their entertainment offerings by establishing a TV studio for public presentations of regional stories.

The extensive network of Bakhresa stores, along with the programming provided by AZAM and the technology provided by Eutelsat, swiftly elevated AZAM TV to the top spot among home entertainment options in the nation. The local populace was quickly captivated by AZAM TV’s broadcasts, and satellite became the main method of receiving with over 56% of Tanzanian homes having satellite equipment as of this writing.
