South African Reserve Bank Invites the High perfoming Graduates Around South Africa to Apply for the SARB Graduate Programme for the Academic year 2026.
About South African Reserve Bank
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) first opened its doors for business on 30 June 1921.
Prior to the SARB’s establishment, commercial banks issued banknotes to the public, which had to be backed by gold.
Due to unusual financial and monetary conditions created by World War I (1914–1918), the price of gold in the United Kingdom rose higher than in South Africa. As a result, a profit could be made by converting banknotes into gold in South Africa and selling the gold in London. This forced local banks to buy gold from London and re-import it at a loss.
