What is SASSA Food Parcel?

Food prices have drastically increased worldwide in the past few years, and South Africa is no different. While the increased prices have impacted all ranks of society, the poor and the underprivileged have been most affected.

The South African government recognized this and in 2021 launched the Food Parcel program to provide support to the most vulnerable households by providing the following food items such as;

  • Maize
  • Rice
  • Tinned foods

Other non-perishable items

Eligibility Criteria for SASSA Food Parcel

First of all, you need to fulfill the below eligibility criteria to be able to get the food voucher:

  • South African Citizenship: You must be a South African citizen by birth and should have a South African 13-digit bar-coded ID Card.
  • Financial Need: You must have no income and be unable to fulfill your basic needs, even food.
  • Not Receiving Any Other Support: You must not be receiving any government grant or any other type of support.
  • Active Phone Number: You must have an active phone number, as SASSA will use it to update you about the status of your food parcel application.

Apart from that, if you are affected by any natural disaster or flood, then you are also eligible to receive the SASSA food parcel.

Documents Required to Apply for SASSA Food Voucher:

Once you fulfill the eligibility criteria, you will also need the following documents to apply:

  • Your 13-digit bar-coded South African ID Card.
  • Your Full Name and Surname. Same as it is printed on your ID Card.
  • Your birth certificate and gender.
  • Proof of your physical address, such as a utility bill.
  • Your contact information, including phone number and email address. (Email address is optional)

Apart from these documents, SASSA can also request additional documents, so you will need to provide all the documents they need.

How to Apply for SASSA Food Voucher/Parcel

Step 1: Visit Your Nearest SASSA Office

First, find your nearest SASSA office. Confirm its opening hours and visit during its operating hours. Most SASSA offices operate from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM and 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Please note that you may encounter long queues outside the SASSA office. Therefore, you need to stand in the queue and wait for your turn.

Step 2: Ask the SASSA Representative for the Food Parcel Application Form

Once your turn comes, request the SASSA officer that you want to apply for a SASSA food parcel. They will hand you the form to fill.

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form and Attach Documents

Now, fill out the form with the correct details and also attach your supporting documents. If you face any difficulty filling out the form, a SASSA representative will help you fill it out.

Please only provide the correct and valid information; any wrong information can result in cancelling your application.

Step 4: Submit the Form

After filling out the form and attaching the documents, please submit it to the representative. They may ask for additional documents, so provide them with all the documents they require.

Step 5: Receive the Receipt and Wait for Approval:

After you submit the form, you will receive a dated stamped receipt with the name of the officer who assisted you in the application. Please keep this receipt as proof, as it may be needed in the future for your application reference.

That’s all you need to submit your application for a SASSA food voucher. SASSA will review and approve your application in at least 7 business days, but the time can vary depending on the workload and the number of applications they receive.
