The Lejweleputswa District Municipality (Sotho: Masepala wa Setereke wa Lejweleputswa; Xhosa: uMasipala weSithili sase Lejweleputswa; Afrikaans: Lejweleputswa-distriksmunisipaliteit) is one of the 5 districts of the Free State province of South Africa. The seat of the municipality is Welkom. As of 2011, a majority of its 657,019 residents speak Sotho. The district code is DC18. Lejweleputswa is a Sesotho word meaning “grey rock”.

Duties and Responsibilities

Participants selected for the programme will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

  • Street and public space cleaning
  • Litter picking and refuse removal
  • Cleaning of parks, sidewalks, and open areas
  • General environmental upkeep

These duties require consistency, teamwork, and a willingness to perform physical work outdoors.

Employment Equity Focus

The programme aims to promote inclusive participation and prioritises:

  • 55% youth participation
  • 60% women participation
  • 2% persons with disabilities

This approach aligns with national transformation and employment equity objectives.

Who Should Apply?

To qualify for this EPWP opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be unemployed
  • Must reside within the municipal area
  • Age requirement: 18 to 55 years
  • Must be physically able to perform manual labour

These requirements ensure that the programme supports local communities most in need of employment.

Duration and Stipend

Duration: 6 months
Participants required: 550 across Lejweleputswa District Municipality
Stipend: EPWP daily wage of R130 (aligned with government guidelines)

The stipend is meant to support basic living expenses during participation in the programme.
