The Outcomes Based Assessment (OBA) is an assessment for overseas registered nurses where they become eligible to undertake two examinations to attain the nursing registration in Australia. The first exam is the NCLEX-RN and the second is the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination).

National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) is an online examination conducted through Pearson VUE test centres in most of the countries. The fees for this exam is USD $350 (approx. AUD $505)

Multiple choice question exam (MCQ)
The multiple-choice question (MCQ) exam assesses the candidate’s professional knowledge. There are separate exams for internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNMs) intending to register in Australia as a registered nurse (RN), enrolled nurse (EN), or midwife:
Objective structured clinical exam (OSCE)
The Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is a clinical exam to assess whether candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills and competence of a graduate-level nurse or midwife from an Australian NMBA-approved program of study.

*An internationally qualified nurse and/or midwife (IQNM) must successfully complete Orientation Part 1 and a multiple choice question (MCQ) exam prior to the OSCE, fees for the Registered nurse and midwife MCQs are set by the MCQ provider.
Please note that:
- On the initial registration, both an application fee and a fee for annual renewal of registration apply.
- There are no fees for the registration of students.
- No application fee applies when changing from general registration type to non-practising.
- A fee applies when applying for non-practising registration and no general registration type is currently held by the applicant.
NMBA Online applications For Nurse and Midwives
Online applications for registration as a nurse and/or midwife are available to:
- final-year students that are due to complete within the next six weeks an Australian-approved program of study, or
- graduates that have completed an Australian-approved program of study within the last two years,
- Midwives who hold a current annual practising certificate with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and who are applying for registration in Australia under the provisions of the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act, or
- Nurses who hold a current annual practising certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and who are applying for registration in Australia under the provisions of the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.

If you are currently registered as an enrolled nurse and are due to complete or have completed an Australian-approved program of study that will qualify you for registration as a registered nurse or midwife, you can apply for registration online via our online services portal.

Registration forms
Renewal of registration
Online application for renewal of registration opens six to eight weeks before your registration expires. AHPRA will send you a reminder when your registration is due. Look out for this as confirmation that online renewal is open.
If you do not renew your general or non-practising registration by 31 May each year, or within the following one month late period, your name will be removed from the national register of practitioners and your registration will lapse in accordance with the National Law.

Non-practising registration
If you currently hold general registration, you can apply for non-practising registration using online services. Log in to your account to apply.
If you currently hold registration without an annual practising certificate with either the Midwifery Council of New Zealand or Nursing Council of New Zealand and are applying for registration in Australia under the provisions of the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act, you can apply online for non-practising registration.
