The Texas Physician Assistant Board licenses competent individuals to serve as physician assistants in Texas. Physician assistants in Texas are required to be licensed and operate under the supervision of one or more supervising doctors. They must have a prescription delegation agreement with their supervising doctor if they prescribe medications (s).
The Texas Physician Assistant Board’s Licensing Department is dedicated to the Board’s purpose of ensuring that the people of Texas get quality health care by respecting the standards established by law and Board regulation and by processing license applications as fast as possible.
Before You Apply
Those interested in becoming physician assistants should utilize the links on the left to learn more about who is qualified, how to apply, and what paperwork and payments are required before submitting their applications. Please bear in mind that the Texas application procedure consists of two steps: pre-licensure and licensure. During the pre-licensure process, the applicant’s documents are gathered, and the applicant is notified by mail or e-mail, if an address is provided, of which documents have been received and which are still required. After all of the paperwork are received, the application is deemed complete, and the process of obtaining a license may begin. Throughout the licensing process, a licensure analyst will review the application and any supporting papers to confirm that all of the information is valid. If the paperwork you have already supplied is incomplete or contains errors, a license analyst will request further information.

Stage 1 – Pre-Licensure (Texas medical license Application)
- On the first business day after you apply, look for an email from us with your LIST username and password.
- Send in the items that are on the LIST tab for “Lacking Reasons.” Based on your application, these are the things we expect you to send or finish.
- Use LIST to keep track of when the items arrived.
- Most of the time, extra things will be needed later. Don’t be afraid! We’d expect that. First, we want to make sure you know the basics.
During pre-licensure, the documents needed are based on the standard requirements for a license and the information given with the application. Please note that documents are not checked for content during the pre-licensure stage. Once an application has been moved to the licensure stage, more information may be needed.
If you need to change the type of license for an application that has already been sent, please contact Board staff through the LIST portal to ask for an update. LIST can be found at the link https://list.tmb.state.tx.us/Default.aspx. If you can’t log in, please call (512) 305-7030 or send an email to [email protected] to get help.
Stage 2 – Licensing
- You have sent in all of the documents needed for your Pre-Licensure application.
- A licensing analyst has been given your application.
- Check LIST often. In the “Lacking Reasons” section, your licensing analyst will list any requests for extra items.
The time it takes to process an application depends on how complicated it is. When the applicant has sent in all of the initial documents and moved on to the licensing stage, the processing time clock starts. Answering “yes” to any of the “Professionalism” questions on the application or not following the instructions when submitting documentation can make the processing time longer. But if you don’t answer application questions honestly, it could be considered that you lied on your application. This will make it take longer for your application to be processed and the Board could take action against you.
In FY 17, it took an average of 41 days to finish an application once it reached the licensing stage.
Texas medical license Application Complete
- Congratulations! You’re all set to get your license!
- A temporary license will be issued if you requested one.
- Twice a month, regular licenses are given out.
- Register your license. You will receive a postcard within 2 weeks of being licensed, with registration instructions.
Know the two most important things! - Completing Stage 1 (Pre-Licensure) does not mean you’re eligible for licensure. Only after you complete Stage 2 (Licensing) are you ready to be licensed.
