TNMC OVERVIEW

Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council is a professional regulatory authority established under the Nursing and Midwifery Act, 2010 to ensure that services provided by nurses and midwives in Tanzania are of acceptable standard and safe to their clients. Only those with the right conduct and qualifications can practice as a nurse or midwife.

The Function of TNMC

To ensure that Register and Roll of nurses and midwives are kept, maintained and updated in prescribed manner.
To prescribe standards of proficiency necessary to be admitted to different parts of the Register or Roll.
To issue, renew, replace and cancel nursing and midwifery practicing licenses
To develop, conduct and regulate nursing and midwifery licensing examinations
To grant licenses for establishing private nursing and midwifery services
To set standards of nursing and midwifery training and education and evaluate quality of education.
To conduct disciplinary proceedings for malpractice, negligence or professional misconduct to licensed nurses and midwife and take disciplinary decision.

INDEXING FOR STUDENTS

We regulated nursing education and training through verification of the admitted students in the Nursing and Midwifery schools/program to ensure their eligibility to enter in the professional

We also aiming to maintain quality and standards of training by keeping database of students pursuing Nursing and Midwifery training at all level from certificate to PhD levels in the approved and recognized training institutions

Through indexing we provides data on the students enrollments in the training institutions/program and able to forecasting for both training and professional needs within and outside Tanzania

The indexing details are to track your progress during and after training and determine your eligibility to sit the Council’s licensure examination.

TNMC will not recognize any students in the study who has not registered in the preliminary stage and will not able to sit for licensure examination or practice

It is essential for planning, distribution, allocation of examination number and centers for licensure examination to the eligible candidates.

HOW TO APPLY

Upon admission to a training school, for all nursing and midwifery programmes, we require students to submit an application for Indexing within 60 days following commencement of training.

Individual students is responsible to process the application through online web access and on completion an identification number will be automatated provided (TNMC-Index Number) which is a unique reference that will remain your identification throughout training and practice. It also includes filling of forms and paying prescribed fees

School and program approval guideline and process

Our role in education

We committed to ensure public health safety through regulation of education practice and nursing training and conduct by making sure that the set standards are adhered for verification and approve of the nursing and midwifery schools/institutions and programs
We maintain schools/institutions information in database in consistency to number of students admitted

We maintain the schools/program through registration and licensing the schools

Approval of education and training schools/programs

We recognize and register, all nurses and midwives eligible for registration. The individual must have successfully completed nursing and midwifery training from a TNMC approved and recognized school/institution/program.

The approval process completed after the school has met the requirements stipulated in the Act and Regulations 2020. To date, the Council has approved 107 nursing/midwifery training schools/institutions to train students at certificate, diploma,degree ,master’s and PhD level

It is necessary that students make sure that the institution where they will be trained is approved by the Council AND that the training programme (course). The Tanzania nursing and midwifery Council will not recognize any students or graduates trained from unrecognized and not approved school/institutions /programs of the training the student has received. This means that the learner will not be able to practice in Tanzania (or elsewhere) after completing the training. The education and training regulations (available on this website) give minimum entry requirements for each nursing/midwifery training programmes.

It is a requirement that all training institutions undergo the recognition process. It is based on best practices and adherence of the establishment criteria and quality standards for operation. It ensures that nursing and midwifery programs meet or exceed a variety of standards. This process is necessary to ensure students receive the quality education for their professional field.
