Why are fold mountains found along the west coast of many continents
Why are fold mountains found along the west coast of many continents This page explains why many continents’ western coastlines are lined by fold mountains. When two or more of the Earth’s tectonic plates collide, it often results in the formation of fold mountains. Rocks and debris are distorted and folded into rocky outcrops, hills, mountains, and even entire mountain ranges at these clashing, compressing borders.
As a result of the rotational movement of the plates, fold mountains may be seen along the western coasts of numerous continents. For instance, the North American Plate spins counter-clockwise, while the Eurasian Plate spins in the other direction.
Formation of fold mountains
Fold mountains are formed when two tectonic plates move towards each other leading to the folding of the layers of the Earth.
