The Botswana Premier League, presently called as the BTC Premiership due to sponsorship reasons, is Botswana’s highest level football league. The Botswana Football Association organized the league in 1978 to replace the provincial pre-independence Bechuanaland Union African Soccer League.

Tlokweng Pirates, Notwane, Black Peril, Queens Park Rangers, and a team from Ngwaketse district took part in the first season of the competition.

Until the 2006-07 season, when Ecco City Greens became the first team from the north to win the lucrative competition, the league was dominated by teams from south of Dibete or in the southern half of the country.

Be Mobile, a mobile phone company, has donated 30 million pula to the league. After the ABSA Premiership in South Africa, the Be Mobile league is the COSAFA region’s second most sponsored competition.

The league has grown by leaps and bounds, as evidenced by the increasing number of foreign players in the BPL. In recent years, top Zimbabwean players such as Arnold Chaka, Master Masitara, Elvis Meleka, Mandla Sibanda, Sageby Sandaka, and Tendai Ndoro have abandoned the Zimbabwean PSL in favor of the BPL.

Namibian celebrities such as Jerome Luis and Benson Shilongo have recently visited Botswana in search of the Pula.
Following the termination of its television contract with the South African business RP Productions, the league is now pursuing a long-term arrangement with Supersport International. In early 2013, five BPL games were televised on pay TV as a test.
