Bar Exams Overview

The Supreme Court of the Philippines, acting through the SC’s Bar Exam Committee, administers the annual Philippine Bar Examination to candidates for legal practice. The Professional Regulation Commission does not regulate any other professional licensing tests, including this one (PRC).

The 120th set of bar examinations will be held in November 2022 for all future attorneys.

In the Philippines, the bar exam is regarded as the toughest professional test. Only a 27% average passing rate was noted from 2010 to 2019. The amount of Philippine cases and statutory legislation, which is on the rise, is mostly to blame for the difficulties in passing.

The batch with the highest passing percentage, 2020-2021, had a 72.28% success rate.

Candidates who have failed the bar test three times are not eligible to retake it unless they enroll in and successfully complete the usual fourth-year review classes as well as a pre-bar review course at an accredited institution.

Passing Percentage of Bar Exams 2023

An examinee must have a 75% overall average and no grade lower than a 50% in any topic in order to pass the bar tests. Although this is usual, SC En Banc may change and decrease the passing rate.

In 2012, the passing percentage was reduced to 70%, and it was further decreased to 73% for the 2013 and 2014 bar examinations.

The final Tuesday and Wednesday in July and July are when the UBE is administered over the course of two days. The MBE is given on Wednesday, while the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) and Multistate Performance Test (MPT) are given on Tuesday.

The MEE contains of essay questions that assess the participant’s ability to use legal reasoning to solve a variety of legal problems. The MPT tests a student’s practical abilities by having them complete various legal tasks, like writing a client letter or memorandum. The MBE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions covering the following seven legal disciplines: evidence, real property, contracts, torts, criminal law and procedure, and constitutional law. The test is broken up into two, three-hour sections with 100 questions each.

How to Calculate Bar exam Results Scored

There are 175 scored questions out of the 200 total questions on the MBE. The 25 ungraded questions are regarded as “test” questions. Each accurate response earns you one point toward your overall raw score. The NCBE uses a complicated methodology based on the difficulty of previous tests to scale this score from 1-200. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the precise number of questions that must be answered properly in order to pass. To pass the bar test, you should aim for a scaled score of at least 140, but 150 or more is preferred.

By adding 10 to 15 points to the amount of right answers during your bar exam practice test, you may roughly estimate your scaled MBE score, but no formula can account for your scored and unscored questions or the precise scale used by the NCBE for your final exam.

Additionally, bear in mind that the MBE score’s overall weight varies depending on whether you reside in a UBE jurisdiction, but it still accounts for a sizeable amount of your overall score—typically between 40 and 50%.

How to Approximate Your Scaled Score?

The formula to approximate your scaled score is rather simple:
