Bar Exams Overview

A committee or board of bar examiners administers the bar exam in each state and territory of the United States. The goal is to determine if an applicant, who is often a recent law school graduate, is qualified to practice law there. There will be a two-day bar exam. On the last Wednesdays of February and July each year, it is often administered. State-specific standards for bar entrance and the required score both differ. The MBE (multistate bar exam), MEE (multistate essay examination), and MPT (multistate proficiency test) are the three tests that make up the state association-administered bar exam in the majority of US states that have adopted the UBE (Uniform Bar Exam) format (multistate performance test).

The bar test lasts two days in most states. The Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), a typical 200-item test that includes six subjects, is the first test of the day (Evidence, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Real Property, and Torts). The essay test on Day Two often consists of state-specific (written by local authorities) essays. Day Two provides two nationally created (“multistate”) exams for the states that have embraced the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) framework: the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT).

The final Tuesday and Wednesday in February and July are when the UBE is administered over the course of two days. The MBE is given on Wednesday, while the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) and Multistate Performance Test (MPT) are given on Tuesday.

The MEE contains of essay questions that assess the participant’s ability to use legal reasoning to solve a variety of legal problems. The MPT tests a student’s practical abilities by having them complete various legal tasks, like writing a client letter or memorandum. The MBE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions covering the following seven legal disciplines: evidence, real property, contracts, torts, criminal law and procedure, and constitutional law. The test is broken up into two, three-hour sections with 100 questions each.

How to Calculate Bar exam Results Scored

There are 175 scored questions out of the 200 total questions on the MBE. The 25 ungraded questions are regarded as “test” questions. Each accurate response earns you one point toward your overall raw score. The NCBE uses a complicated methodology based on the difficulty of previous tests to scale this score from 1-200. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the precise number of questions that must be answered properly in order to pass. To pass the bar test, you should aim for a scaled score of at least 140, but 150 or more is preferred.

By adding 10 to 15 points to the amount of right answers during your bar exam practice test, you may roughly estimate your scaled MBE score, but no formula can account for your scored and unscored questions or the precise scale used by the NCBE for your final exam.

Additionally, bear in mind that the MBE score’s overall weight varies depending on whether you reside in a UBE jurisdiction, but it still accounts for a sizeable amount of your overall score—typically between 40 and 50%.

How to Approximate Your Scaled Score?

The formula to approximate your scaled score is rather simple:
