What is the South African Nursing Council?
South African Nursing Council is the body entrusted to set and maintain standards of nursing education and practice in the Republic of South Africa. It is an autonomous, financially independent, statutory body, initially established by the Nursing Act, 1944 (Act No. 45 of 1944), and currently operating under the Nursing Act, 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005). The Requirements To Become A Nurse In South Africa
To become a registered nurse in South Africa, first, you must enroll at a credited nursing school by the SA Nursing Council. Once you complete your studies, you can go ahead to do the following:
- Complete a year of mandatory community service. This is mandatory for new nurses and must be done before you join others in the workforce.
- Your school is expected to send a Certificate of Completion to the SANC after your graduation.
- Once it is done, you can go ahead to register with the SA Nursing Council. They would be needing some documents during registration. These documents include:
a. Prescribed registration fees
b. Certificate of good character and standing Proof of your qualifications
c. Proof of identity
d. Further reports and information concerning your application (if needed by the registrar)
- Finally, you would have to take the SANC-administered nursing exam that matches your desired qualification. Once you are successful, you would become a nurse in South Africa.
