Qualification to become Nurse in South Africa
To become Nurse in south Africa you need to have one of the following Education Qualifications ,A Candidates and enrolled Nursing Auxilliaries who passed Grade 12 prior to the current academic year
a four-year bachelor degree in nursing
a three-year diploma
a one-year higher certificate in auxiliary nursing
one-year postgraduate advanced diploma in nursing and midwifery on top of your degree or diploma.
After Qualifying in Nursing Education you need to Register in
Free State School of Nursing College (FSSON) Admission Entry Requirements:
For those who wish to study Nursing they Required to pass the following Subjects Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences, but this is not compulsory at all institutions. You will need a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent qualification at exit level 4, with:
English (50-59%)
First additional or home language (50-59%)
Life Sciences (50-59%)
Maths Literacy (50-59%)
Life Orientation (50-59%)
Admission Procedures
- Completed application forms must be received at the College from the 01st of April to the 31 of August each year.
- The prescribed Free State School of Nursing College (FSSON) application for admission form must be completed and signed.
- A certified copy of the Senior Certificate., Identity book and marriage certificate where applicable.
- Rating scale completed.
- Certified proof of registration with SANC (where applicable)
What i will become After Studying Nursing?
The BCur usually prepares students to work in four specific fields:
- general nursing (working in hospitals and medical practices)
- community nursing
- psychiatric nursing
- midwifery (caring for mothers and babies)
Documents and Attachment Required to Enroll Nursing College
Attach deposit slip for administration fee. If not attached the application will be disqualified.
NB 2: Three telephone numbers of relatives or friends must be written on application form.
NB 3: Applicants must have obtained a senior certificate or nation
al senior certificate not more than three years ago.

A. DIPLOMA IN NURSING R171 – ACCESS CRITERIA
The access criteria for the Free State School of Nursing is guided by:
- Government Gazette 41474 of 2 March 2018 – Minimum Admission Requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Degree programmes.
- National Department of Health: National Policy on Nursing Education and Training.
- SANC 2013 Diploma in Nursing Qualification Framework
SENIOR CERTIFICATE OBTAINED IN 2008 OR LATER
National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with six subjects from the designated list or equivalent certificate
- Matric Certificate or equivalent thereof
- AP score 25 and above (6 Subjects and Life Orientation)
- Life Orientation counted as 1 irrespective of the level obtained
Compulsory
- English level 4 (50-59%) and above
- Mathematic Literacy (50-59%) and above
- Life Science (50-59%) and above
Recommended
- Computer Literacy Grade 9
- Preference will be given to candidates Physical Science
SENIOR CERTIFICATE OBTAINED BEFORE 2008
- Matriculation Exemption or equivalent thereof
- M-Score 23 and above (A maximum of 6 subjects)
Compulsory
- English HG (50%, E Symbol) and above or SG (60%, D Symbol) and above
- Biology or Physiology HG (50%) and above or SG (60%) and above
- Mathematics HG (40%) / SG (50%) or Commercial Mathematics SG (50%)
Recommended
- Preference will be given to candidates Physical Science
B. HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN AUXILIARY NURSING R169 – ACCESS CRITERIA
The access criteria for the Free State School of Nursing is guided by:

Candidates will be required to meet the following criteria
Admission requirements for applicants who matriculated from 2008
- Matric Certificate or equivalent thereof
- AP Score 23 and above
- English level 4
- Life Science level 4
- Mathematic Literacy level 4
- Preference will be given to candidates with Computer Literacy Grade and Physical Science
Admission requirements for applicants who matriculated before 2008
- Matric Certificate or equivalent thereof
- M-Score 20 and above
- English SG (50%, D symbol) and above
- Biology or Physiology
- Preference will be given to candidates with Mathemathics and Physical Science
C. ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN MIDWIFERY R1497 – ACCESS CRITERIA
Candidates will be required to meet following criteria
- Matric Certificate or equivalent thereof
- Diploma in Nursing (NQF level 6)
- Registration as a General Nurse at the South African Nursing Council.

The Free State School of Nursing’s point system for converting your Grade 12 achievement to an Admission Point Score is explained in the table below. Column 1 (NSC level of achievement, Percentage) and Column 2 (APS) gives the NSC of achievement that is awarded for percentages attained in your Grade 12 subjects (Six subjects from designated list)
