The South Africa Reserve Force Division

The Military Skills Development System (MSDS) or direct SANDF recruiting are the two options for joining the South Africa Reserve Force Division.

The MSDS is a Department of Defense initiative that provides young South Africans interested in joining the South African National Defense Force with an entry-level platform (SANDF). The MSDS is a voluntary two-year program that aims to provide young people with the skills they need to land great jobs in the workforce.

Trainees are paid while enrolled in the training program and are provided with housing and food. On January 20, 2023, applications for the MSDS opened. The SANDF 2023 application period ended on February 28, 2023.

The South African National Defence Force will require the two years of initial voluntary service from MSDS shortlisted candidates.

You will be given a 5-year contract to join the reserves after the first two years of service, which can be extended until the age of 65.

Only those with specialized skills, such as engineers, IT pros, diesel mechanics, etc., can be hired directly.

SANDF Recruitment Requirements

MSDS programme Requirements

Candidates for MSDD programme must:

• be a South African citizen.
• age between 18 and 22 years (Graduates up to the age of 26 years).

• Not area bound.
• Have no record of a criminal offense.
• Be preferably single.
• Comply with medical fitness requirements for appointment in the South African National Defence Force.
• Be prepared to do Basic Military Training, Functional Training, and to serve in uniform.
