The Southwest Indian Ocean Basin had its first tropical cyclone of the 2021/22 season this past weekend. Late last week, a tropical low developed rapidly over the open ocean north of Mauritius and Reunion Islands, northeast of Madagascar. ‘ Over the weekend, the system swung from the east to the west over central and northern Madagascar, weakening briefly due to friction with the landmass and the lack of latent heat energy release from the ocean’s surface (the main energy driver for tropical cyclones). ‘ It continued to strengthen overnight, and by Monday morning it had become a moderate tropical storm, earning the name “Ana.” The storm moved to the west and, by Monday morning local time, was located between Angoche and Mogincual, off the northern Mozambican coast. Thereafter, the system moved to the east.
