How to Apply For a Matric Exemption Certificate?

How to Apply For a Matric Exemption Certificate? Students who obtained a Senior Certificate without endorsing it or an equivalent foreign school-leaving qualification and wish to pursue first degree studies at a South African university are issued exemption certificates.

Law requires students who failed to earn an endorsement on their Senior Certificate to submit an application for a matriculation exemption to the Matriculation Board.

The Matriculation Board, which will then issue a certificate of exemption to those who qualify, must evaluate the school credentials of any international students who wish to enroll in first-degree studies in South Africa.

There are two different kinds of exemptions: certificates of total exemption and certificates of conditional exemption.

Complete exemption certificates don’t have an expiration date, but when they go into effect depends on the qualification upon which they were granted.

Certificates of conditional exemption are issued for the following:

  • Mature age which is offered to 23-year-old students and lasts for the full-time duration of study plus two years.
  • Foreign conditional which lasts for the full-time duration of study plus two years.
  • Ordinary conditional which lasts for a year, and have to be renewed every year until the student meets the requirements of the exemption.
  • Senate’s discretionary exemption, which is granted once the student, has completed a recognized Access course or a Foundation programme and it lasts for three years.

There are various types of exemption certificates. Because of this, the certificate will state the different validation periods.

You must submit an application to the Board if you go from one university to another in order for your exemption certificate to be transferred to the new institution where you desire to register.

If you are eligible for the Senate’s Discretionary exemption, though, you must inquire with the receiving university about their willingness to accept you with that kind of exemption.

Exemptions are granted to the institution at which you have already registered. You may submit as many applications as you wish, but you may only enroll for one academic year at a given institution.

You must receive the M30e form in order to apply, which is available from:

The Matriculation Board processes online/faxed inquiries in 5–10 working days due to the high volume of inquiries the office receives.

If the applicant is eligible for exemption, a provisional letter is issued, which, provided the applicant satisfies the institutional requirements, is sufficient to facilitate admission to a South African public university.

Furthermore, processing an application form takes about the same amount of time. Following receipt of all pertinent documents that have been accurately certified and the required payment, the actual exemption certificate is issued in about 6 to 8 weeks.
