WWF is seeking to hire a Project Executant for Lion project in SOKNOT to be based in Arusha, Tanzania
Major Functions:
Job Opportunity at WWF – Project Executant March 2022 This is a field-based position and responsible for implementing a project to gain a greater understanding of lions in Tanzania and collaborate with other organizations and across boundaries to work towards coexistence between people and lions. Lions are included with elephants, rhinos and other wildlife species e.g., wild dogs, as WWF’s flagship species for conservation and management. As such, monitoring their population numbers, distribution, conflict incidences, retaliatory killing, and local perceptions of lions determines whether efforts to address threats, such as human-lion conflict, are effective, and where we can improve, particularly within the Southern Kenya and northern Tanzania (SOKNOT) trans boundary landscape between Tanzania and Kenya.
Specific Required Functional Skills
- Collect data, and recommend management or projects to improve lion (and other species) habitat management;
- Implement quality assurance/quality control plans to ensure the lion data collected and products prepared meet WWF standards and regulations and align with best practice;
- Develop and store information pertinent to the protection or restoration of lions within the SOKNOT Landscape;
- Contribute to the establishment of a lion conflict database through maintaining through working with existing reports and conflict monitors;
- Help to develop and deploy well-being and wildlife perception surveys within communities, using recognized social science methodologies;
- Utilize and support partners in the use of SECR methodology for baseline lion census data collection and continued monitoring;
- Identifies and aligns with the core values of the WWF organization: Courage, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of a university degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Zoology or related disciplines including Environmental Science, Range Management, and Natural Resources Management; A masters will be an added advantage but it is not a must. At least three years of experience as Biologist or Ecologist in and outside Protected Areas in the country (Game Reserves, National Parks or Ngorongoro Conservation Area); Strong analytical skills including analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data and report writing;
