Tanzania had 25 regions in 1975. The Ziwa Magharibi Region (West Lake Region) was renamed Kagera Region in the 1970s. A portion of Arusha Region was used to construct the Manyara Region in 2002. Geita, Katavi, Njombe, and Simiyu are the four regions that were established in 2012. The western portion of Mbeya Region was combined to form Songwe Region in 2016.
